Artist Melanie Manchot is looking for people from all walks of life to be participants in her new artwork.

Oct 03rd 2017

She invites people of all ages and backgrounds to join three 'unconventional' choirs for a performance piece to be presented in North West Cambridge early this December. Melanie Manchot is a visual artist and her project is part of the North West Cambridge Development.

For her residency and commission with the University of Cambridge Melanie has been engaging with post doc researchers from a broad diversity of disciplines to explore the future of friendship, shelter and community in the context of the NW Cambridge Development. For the first period of her project, Melanie collaborated with researchers in a series of 'cross-talk' events to explore the above themes in a cross-disciplinary exchange. These conversations were observed by a group of 'translators' from different creative disciplines including slam poetry, drama, clown and paganism. These four translators are now each devising a 'score' and the four 'scores' will be presented together in a performance at the newly inaugurated Community Centre on the North West Cambridge site.

To present these four elements we are looking for people to join four choirs i.e a clown choir, a drama choir and a slam poetry/rap choir (the pagan choir is already complete). These choirs will be formed specifically for this project, so they are not pre-existing choirs.

If you are interested here are a couple of pointers that will help you decide which choir might be best for you:

The clown choir is looking for people with no prior experience to perform a choreography of gestures and sounds, lead by a professional clown who will create a fun and safe environment for you to explore ideas. You don't need to have formal singing or acting experiences but being able to hold a tone is of benefit.

The drama choir is looking for a total of 8 people to perform a short piece that looks at the tradition of the Greek Chorus. Ideally you have some experience in acting or performing, but the piece does not require formal training as such.

The slam poetry/rap choir will be constituted of people who have some singing skills. Ideally you can hold a tone and enjoy singing but you don't need to have any formal training or prior choir experience.

To participate you will need to attend 4-6 rehearsals, which will take place mostly in the early evening or weekends to accommodate people's working lives.

Rehearsals will take place in October and November - dates will be confirmed to suit most people's availability.

The performance will take place on:
Saturday 9 December, potentially two performances, one afternoon, one evening.
Filmed Dress Rehearsal: 8 December evening

We look forward to hearing from you. Please get in touch with Melanie Manchot on

Melanie Manchot

Melanie Manchot is a London based visual artist who works with photography, film and video as a performative and participatory practice. Her projects often explore specific sites, public spaces or particular communities in order to locate notions of individual and collective identities. The mutability of subjectivity as well as the agency of the camera in creating a set of relations are key interests within Manchot's on-going enquiry into personhood and its representations.
